By the time my niece was four she was telling me how she wished she had blonde hair and blue eyes. She hated her curly hair and whenever I tried to leave it natural she would scream at me to put it in a pony tail or straighten it. Her confidence and self esteem were ruined by the time she was in kindergarten. Kids in her pre k class told her they couldn’t play with her because she was black and she was called a nigger by numerous children. When she was in first grade she said she hated school and would fake being sick so she didn’t have to go. I cringe whenever someone says she’s pretty for a black girl. You don’t realize the damage you’re doing to her self esteem. My niece, at eight years old, constantly wishes she was the blonde hair, blue eyed, straight hair girl and it breaks my heart.
